'Speck' in 'Kummerspeck' doesn't mean bacon. It means body fat. 'Du hast aber ordentlich Speck am Bauch', doesn't translate to too much bacon but too fat. Also 'Abspecken' a world for losing fat means literally losing fat through activity. Speck means bacon but it also is an alternative word for body fat. Kinda old slang. Probably because bacon leads to weight.

If you read old letters and memoirs, as I do, you find that until the late 18th century, if not later, what I presume to be "orange" was almost invariably described as "flame-colored". The word does not appear until relatively recently. I am South Indian and one word for an orange, the fruit, is narinj.

I'm tired of having a to repeat everywhere that the hieroglyphs didn't denote vowels, so the ox isn't an A, the reed isn't an I, and the chick isn't an U. Those were the French R / arabic GH, the Y, and the W. Vowels existed, but weren't noted, which is still how it's done in Hebrew, a former sister language, where Aleph still denotes the remnant of this French R / arabic GH, the glottal stop. A small bit of actual research would lead you to know that. The Greeks took the letters from the phœnician alphabet which denoted sounds they didn't have and used them to write their vowels.

When I read 13 Reasons Why, I thought Jay Asher must have no idea what it is like to be depressed or suicidal. Does he have personal experience of those things? No? Then it's not his story to tell. Also, he was kicked out of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators due to allegations by 7 people saying he used his position as a successful writer to lure women into sexual relations with him, then threatened them to cover it up. I'm not saying his book should be banned, but I'm saying maybe it needs a kind of Surgeon General's Warning on the cover.
